Jang Ki-yong transforms into father of middle school daughter with “disheveled long hair” (The Atypical Family)

Actor Jang Ki-yong completed his military service and returns to the small screen with "The Atypical Family"

In JTBC’s new Saturday-Sunday drama “The Atypical Family”, which will premiere today (May 4th), Jang Ki-yong plays the role of Bok Gwi-joo, who has “time travel” superpower but lost his ability due to depression.

This work, which is presented about three years after the 2021 drama “Now, We Are Breaking Up”, is gaining more anticipation than usual as it marks Jang Ki-yong’s first project after completing his military service.

Jang Ki-yong temporarily puts aside the “neat” visuals usually associated with him. With disheveled long hair and dark expressions throughout, he portrays the confused mind of Bok Gwi-joo.

Having showcased various styles like suits, hanboks, uniforms and neat boyfriend looks in previous works, he now draws attention to the background of Bok Gwi-joo, who develops “depression”, with his worn-out appearance in achromatic-colored clothes.

Through “The Atypical Family”, Jang Ki-yong takes on the role of a father for the first time in his acting career.

Jang Ki-yong expressed his thoughts on challenging the role of a father for the first time, “At first, I was worried if I could play the role of a father well, but I decided to focus on the character and understand the story of young Bok Gwi-joo becoming a father.

Bok Gwi-joo’s delighted smile while holding his newborn daughter in the highlight video sharply contrasts with his depressed and lethargic appearance, raising expectations for Jang Ki-yong’s delicate emotional acting.

In “The Atypical Family”, Jang Ki-yong showcases not only romance with Do Da-hae (played by Chun Woo-hee) but also family chemistry with Bok Man-heum (played by Go Doo-shim), Eom Soon-gu (played by Oh Man-seok), Bok Dong-hee (played by Claudia Kim) and Bok Yi-na (played by Park So-yi).

Furthermore, Jang Ki-yong, who has gained the nicknames “melodrama master” and “straightforward younger man” for his sweet romance acting in various works such as “Search: WWW”, “My Roommate Is a Gumiho” and “Now, We Are Breaking Up”, hints at a melodrama filled with “fondness” this time. The focus is on how Bok Gwi-joo, who suffers from depression and closes his heart, will ignite romance.
