At the age of 71, martial arts legend Jackie Chan has not only been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 78th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland but has also staged an unexpected career revival with the release of his latest film, The Shadow’s Edge.

Jackie Chan candidly reflected on his long journey in cinema: “From an unknown stuntman working just for a meal to someone whose films have been watched around the world — I’ve always held onto one belief: to give my best in every single scene.”

These heartfelt words resonate deeply, especially after a difficult decade. Once the undisputed box office king of Asian cinema, Jackie Chan had faced a string of disappointing projects such as Kung Fu Yoga, The Knight of Shadows: Between Yin and Yang, Vanguard, The Myth 2, and most recently, Karate Kid: Legends. Despite his relentless commitment to action, critics accused him of clinging to nostalgic formulas, unable to connect with younger audiences.

That narrative shifted dramatically with The Shadow’s Edge, which stormed the Chinese box office upon release. After earning 85 million RMB in early screenings, the film’s opening week surged past 200 million RMB. As of August 22, it had crossed 392 million RMB within just one week, according to Maoyan, and even dethroned the animated blockbuster Little Monster of Langlang Mountain. Analysts predict the film could surpass 1 billion RMB, securing a spot among China’s top six box office hits of 2025.

On Douban, the film currently holds a score above 8.0—a rare feat for action cinema—prompting some critics to hail it as “Jackie Chan’s best work in the past decade.”

Directed with both narrative depth and thrilling spectacle, The Shadow’s Edge follows retired security expert Huang Dezhong (Jackie Chan), drawn back into action when a criminal syndicate threatens Macau’s financial district with a massive cryptocurrency heist. His nemesis is crime boss Fu Longsheng, played with chilling gravitas by veteran actor Tony Leung.

The film strikes a balance between suspense, crime drama, and Jackie Chan’s signature martial arts flair. Critics note that while age has inevitably slowed his movements, Jackie Chan’s inventive fight choreography and enduring spirit evoke memories of his classic films. A standout sequence features Tony Leung’s character battling with a dagger in a tense orphanage corridor showdown, described as one of 2025’s most memorable action scenes.

For a star once labeled “box office poison,” The Shadow’s Edge is a redemption story. It proves Jackie Chan can still captivate both long-time fans and new audiences, blending nostalgia with renewed creative energy.

As one critic summarized: “At 71, Jackie Chan has shown that legends don’t fade quietly—they fight, adapt, and sometimes, surprise us all over again.”
