IVE delivered a powerful performance at the Coupang Play Series kickoff event on July 30, but it wasn’t just their music that got people talking. The girl group found themselves at the center of an online firestorm after their game-day outfits sparked a fierce debate among fans and netizens alike.

The group took the field at Suwon World Cup Stadium to perform hits like “HEYA,” “LOVE DIVE,” “REBEL HEART,” and “I AM” during the halftime show of the match between Team K League and Newcastle United. However, some viewers were more focused on what the members were wearing than what they were singing.

“Too Much Exposure” vs “Netizens Are Overreacting”

The controversy mainly centered around Jang Wonyoung, whose outfit — a tight cross-strap mini dress over shorts — drew criticism for being “too revealing” and “unsuitable for a sports venue.” While her fellow members opted for relatively looser styles, Wonyoung’s look stood out due to its fit and form.

Some fans questioned the appropriateness of such an outfit for a public sporting event, suggesting it restricted her movement and made the kickoff look awkward. Others went further, accusing Starship Entertainment of forcing a sexy concept on the 20-year-old star.

On the other hand, many defended IVE and dismissed the backlash as “overblown.”

  • “They wore sneakers, not heels — that’s already considerate for the venue. And it’s summer. What do people expect?”
  • “It’s a performance, not a school ceremony. The outfits reflected their personalities.”

To clarify the situation, IVE’s Rei addressed the issue directly on a fan communication platform: “Isn’t our IVE uniform super cute? We each customized it the way we wanted.” This statement confirmed that the styling decisions were made by the members themselves, not by their stylists or agency. Despite that, the debate continues to rage online especially in international fandoms.

Inappropriate for a Young Role Model?

In particular, Jang Wonyoung’s Chinese fanbase issued a formal protest on July 31, condemning the outfit as overly sexualized and limiting to her movement.

  • “Wonyoung, not yet 21, has always represented a healthy, confident image for young girls.”
  • “But this outfit undermined that — tight, short, and unnecessarily suggestive.”

They further criticized what they perceived as styling bias, stating that Wonyoung alone was pushed into a “sexy” concept while others wore more modest clothing.

“Stage outfits should enhance performance, not serve as marketing tools,” the statement added. “Let her shine in comfort and authenticity, not through forced sex appeal.”

While IVE’s performance was widely praised, the debate over their outfits highlights the persistent tension in K-pop between artistic expression, fan expectations, and public scrutiny. With the group’s comeback scheduled for late August, the spotlight remains firmly on how they and their agency navigate issues of image and autonomy in the ever-watchful eye of the public.
