Kpop idol and actress IU had a splendid experience after appearing at the 75th Cannes Film Festival for the first time.
On May 26th, the world premiere of high-anticipated film “Broker” was held at the Lumière Grand Theater as part of the Palais des Festivals during the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, a resort city in southern France.
“Broker” depicts the unexpected and special journey of people related to a service called “baby box”, where infants have dropped off anonymously and receive care from other people. This is the first Korean-speaking film directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, who previously won the Palme d’Or – the highest honor at the Cannes Film Festival for his 2018 movie “A Family”, and the Jury Prize for the 2013 movie “Becoming a Father”
At the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, “Broker” drew huge attention with many people trying to get tickets for its official screening. There are also a lot of oversea fans patiently waiting for and taking pictures of IU – one of the top Kpop stars.
For her first time in Cannes, IU appeared in a gray off-shoulder dress that revealed her shoulders and collarbone, and received the spotlight with her elegant charm. As she walked down the red carpet, IU turned to where her fans had gathered, approached them, and responded to requests for her photos and autographs one by one.
IU’s gestures at the Cannes truly heated up the Cannes and displayed extraordinary love for her fans. The idol-actress even looked reluctant when she had to cease her communication with fans and return to the red carpet.
While she was introduced at the Cannes Film Festival as “actress Lee Ji Eun”, many French audiences recognized her as a Kpop star, surprising the rest of the crowd. In “Broker”, IU assumes the role of So Young, who joins the rest of the cast to find new parents for her baby, bringing forth a whole different image in her acting career.
Starring alongside senior actors such as Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and Bae Doona, IU managed to make a remarkable parent as a mysterious woman who hides everything in her past and boasted the acting of raw family love that was approved by director Hirokazu Koreeda.
Immediately after “Broker” ended, the movie received a 12-minute standing ovation at the Cannes. This is the longest standing ovation received by a Korean film among all those invited to this year’s Cannes. As Hirokazu Koreeda introduced the main cast of “Broker”, IU showed up on the screen, looking sky while smiling and clapping silently.
