IU “I asked Suga if I could have RM’s number, but I never called him”

On Dec 26th, the “SUCHWITA” IU episode was released through the YouTube channel “BANGTANTV”.

Suga collaborated with IU for the first time through “Eight” in 2020. When Suga opened up by saying “I wasn’t your first choice to do a collab with“, IU asked “You really want to talk about that?” then laughed.

IU disclosed the behind-the-scenes of “Eight”, “At first, I asked Suga if I could have RM’s number.” Imagining a collaboration with RM instead of Suga, IU said, “I think… It would’ve been something really serious.”

She explained, “Because mentally, at the time, I wasn’t in the best place. I wanted to bring out those emotions in a song.

IU told Suga, “So I asked you if I could have his number, and got it. But I never called him. Asking you for his number took a lot of courage for me and I had this impulse to do this quickly. That’s how I felt but after I got his number… He’s just a total stranger. I couldn’t get up the courage to just call someone I didn’t know at all.”

IU continued, “After that, I just kind of lost interest in doing that song. Then I suddenly thought of ‘Eight’. I came up with the title first. The state that I was in… Those listless feelings were on a constant loop like the number eight! And since I was 28 too. I thought I should go with ‘Eight’. And then I thought, it’d be better to do it with someone my own age. Of all the producers our age, the best is you!

Suga recalled, “We worked really fast though. In the beginning I gave you two songs. One was really bright… It was bright and cheery, but you said, ‘Not this one.’ So I said I’d write another one and that was ‘Eight’.

IU defined producer Suga as “someone with high standards”. After “Eight”, they once again worked together through “Person Pt.2”. IU shared, “You have a higher standard when you’re working on your song and I felt like you were strict with yourself.

The conversation then delved into IU’s music career. IU made her debut at 16 with the ballad “A Lost Child” and later transformed into the nation’s younger sister through “Good Day”. Starting adding dance elements from that point, IU confessed, “Looking back now, I think it was the right move.”

IU went on to say, “I’m the kid who always danced at school talent shows. Voluntarily! But my personality changed a bit in middle school. When I was in the upper grades of elementary school, my family started having a hard time financially so I had to transfer schools almost every year. I went to three different middle schools. I was in the 8th grade when I started out as a trainee. Rumors spread about that. And sometimes, I’d leave school early so it was hard to make a lot of friends.”

IU added, “I was kind of introverted back then. When we see 9th graders or 10th graders now, they look so cute. But when you’re that age… You’re really dark and moody at that age. That’s when you think you’re all grown up. So I didn’t think it suited me at all. But seeing it now, I think I just look cute.”
