JTBC’s Friday-Saturday-Sunday drama “Reborn Rich,” starring actor Song Joong Ki, topped in more than 50 countries around the world, including the U.S, Brazil and the U.K.
According to global OTT platform Rakuten Viki, “Reborn Rich” swept the chart in more than 50 countries on five continents, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, the U.K, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and India, in only five days after it was launched on the OTT service.
This is a significant figure that was created immediately in the series’ first week without any needed warm-up period. In addition, as “Reborn Rich” succeeded in ranking at the top in most of the other countries currently provided with Rakuten Viki’s service, the hype regarding “Reborn Rich” is expected to gradually double over time.
According to an analysis of Rakuten Viki, the popularity of Song Joong Ki, who gained recognition among global viewers through the dramas “Descendants of the Sun” and “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, played a big role. With such an element, it seems that “Reborn Rich” took advantage of high overseas interest in K-dramas, and immediately took the lead.
Starring Song Joong Ki, Lee Sung Min, and Shin Hyun Been, “Reborn Rich” is a fantasy drama that follows a secretary who was reborn into a rich family and laid out a revenge plan. In Korea, it recorded a viewership rating of 11.7% in the metropolitan area (Nielsen Korea) within 3 episodes and ranked first in its time slot. In addition, according to Good Data Corporation, the drama placed 1st in terms of TV topics (drama category), and 1st in the actor category with Song Joong Ki, proving global popularity.
On the other hand, the global OTT platform Rakuten Viki is a video streaming service that provides Asian dramas and movies. The platform is available in over 190 countries around the world, including the Middle East, Oceania, India, as well as the Americas and Europe. This year, it provides various popular K-dramas such as “Love in Contract”, “Love is for Suckers”, “Yumi’s Cells 2”, and “Curtain Call”, as well as entertainment programs like “Youth MT”.
