“Is ‘Pachinko’ Han-su a Trash Character?” Lee Min-ho Says, “I Didn’t Think So”

Lee Min-ho talked about his portrayal of Han-su at the press conference for Apple TV+’s “Pachinko” Season 2 held on August 23rd at a hotel in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Lee Min-ho described Han-su as a “person who survives” and mentioned that he aimed to portray Han-su’s deeper desires and human emotions.

“Pachinko” tells a story that begins with forbidden love and unfolds across Korea, Japan and the United States, chronicling unforgettable tales of war and peace, love and separation, triumph and judgment. Season 1 garnered significant acclaim, sweeping 11 world-class award ceremonies including the Peabody Awards, American Film Institute Awards, Critics Choice Awards and Gotham Independent Film Awards.

In the series, Han-su (played by Lee Min-ho) becomes wealthy as the son-in-law of a Japanese yakuza but falls in love with Sun-ja (played by Kim Min-ha). He faces criticism for not disclosing his marital status to Sun-ja and proposing that she live with him.

Lee Min-ho explained that Han-su’s obsession with Sun-ja and his desire for a child without marriage was more about possession than love. He acknowledged that men’s understanding of women was lacking at the time, leading Han-su to prioritize his own feelings and disregard Sun-ja’s responses.

Lee Min-ho humorously added that if Han-su were a character in today’s world, he would likely receive poor reviews.

Meanwhile, “Pachinko” Season 2 is set to premiere on August 23rd.
