Indian actress received malicious comments after saying she wants to play Rapunzel

Disney’s live-action film “The Little Mermaid” caused controversy by casting a black actress different from the original.

In the midst of this, an Indian actress is being criticized by netizens for her remarks during an interview.

According to a report by Independent on June 17th (local time), Indian-Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (21) is under intense attack from malicious commenters due to her past interview.

Ramakrishnan, who gained huge popularity with Netflix’s series “Never Have I Ever”, said in an interview with CBS News in 2021, “My dream is to play Rapunzel in Disney’s live-action film.

She explained, “I think Rapunzel should be a South Asian girl. Because hear me out, no one knows what it feels like to be trapped in your room, not able to go out because your mother is telling you no, without giving you an actual proper reason like brown girls do. It’s true. That would be like a dream role for me.”

After the interview, many Indians supported her, but most netizens criticized her remarks.

They claimed that Rapunzel is a white character with blonde hair, so if an Indian actress with tanned skin and black hair plays Rapunzel, they cannot immerse themselves in the work.

Recently, her remarks were re-examined when Disney included “Tangled” in their live-action film lineup.

After watching her interview, some netizens were worried that Disney would cast an Indian actress as Rapunzel.

Netizens stated that since black Ariel appeared, Indian Rapunzel may also appear.

Ramakrishnan recently opened up about this controversy.

She shared the OST “I’ve Got a Dream” of the animation “Tangled” through Twitter and countered by leaving comments such as “Anyways… the ‘mega fans’ who are pressed because I said I’ve got a dream role clearly didn’t listen to the soundtrack enough” and “Not feeling bad about saying my dream and wishing for a shot to show what I got. Till then, I’m still just living my life trying to learn how to crochet.

Ramakrishnan’s fans are sending messages of encouragement and support.

Attention is focused on whether her dream will come true.
