After facing backlash for allegedly visiting a zoo that abuses animals, actress Hwang Jung Eum has spoken up.

Previously on July 26th, Hwang Jung Eum published several photos of herself at a zoo overseas. Considering the condition of the animals in these pictures, however, netizens believe that this zoo abuses animals, leading to heavy criticisms.

Later on in the same day, Hwang Jung Eum clarified animal abuse controversy, saying, “It’s not what it seems. People are inside the cage. Tigers are in the wild”.

Her intention was to dispel misunderstandings from those who criticized the previously revealed images, which looked like she was observing a tiger and a lion trapped inside a steel fence.

However, netizens were even more appalled by the appearance of the animals, which were so thin, they had visible bones protruding.

Some netizens expressed harsh opinions, with one saying, “Did you not see the lion’s spine? It looks like it’s in a malnourished state… The overall environment looks too poor… If you see it in person, it must be heartbreaking, it’s cruel… What crime did the animal commit to be trapped in such a place? Do you find it funny to see that?ㅠ”
