Hong Kong’s legendary actor and director Richard Ng, passed away on October 31, 2025 , in Taiwan at the age of 81, according to a report from Qingdao News on November 1.
Ng, affectionately known as the “Comedy Grandmaster”, was one of the most iconic figures in Hong Kong cinema during the 1970s to 1990s. He gained immense popularity through memorable comic performances in classic films such as Lucky Stars as “Rhino Skin,” The Romancing Star as “Lau Ding Kin,” and The Crazy Companies as “Ng Jing Fan.”

Ng’s humor—marked by sharp wit and heartfelt absurdity—defined a generation of Hong Kong comedies, inspiring countless actors and filmmakers who followed.
Tragically, only three days before his passing, Ng had posted a heartfelt tribute to fellow veteran actor Hui Siu Hung, who had recently died. In his message, Ng wrote, “Brother, wait for me there; your foolish elder will join you soon.” What seemed a touching farewell turned out to be prophetic.
Throughout his life, Richard Ng never married and had no children. He once shared a tender youth romance with actress Liza Wang. W ang later reflected on their brief relationship, saying, “We were on different paths. Perhaps being single suited him better.”
In recent years, Ng’s health had deteriorated. He was hospitalized for pneumonia in May 2025 and required an oxygen concentrator to support his breathing after discharge. Despite these struggles, he faced illness with the same humor and grace that characterized his screen presence.

Fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry have since taken to social media to express their grief, celebrating Ng’s legacy as a pioneer who brought laughter to millions.
As one fan poignantly commented, “He made the world laugh for decades—now may he rest in peace, smiling still.”
