On July 24, Netflix officially announced the release date for its upcoming series Aema — August 22 — and unveiled a teaser poster and trailer.
Aema is a Netflix original series that reimagines the creation of Korea’s iconic erotic film from the 1980s, Madame Aema, shedding light on the dark realities hidden behind its glamorous spotlight. The story follows top star Hee-ran (played by Honey Lee) and rookie actress Joo-ae (played by Bang Hyo-rin), who boldly challenge an industry obsessed with female nudity. Directed by Lee Hae-young (Believer), this marks the director’s first venture into series format and brings together a stellar cast including Jin Seon-kyu and Jo Hyun-chul, promising an unexpected and exciting chemistry.
The teaser poster captures the theater marquee featuring Madame Aema, with top star Hee-ran and newcomer Joo-ae posing in stark contrast to each other — from their expressions and makeup to their clothing — piquing curiosity about the dynamic between the two characters. The tagline, “In an era obsessed with stripping women, they’re about to turn the tables,” underscores a powerful message: these women won’t conform to an unfair system, and instead will unite and resist in their own unique ways.
The teaser trailer gives a deeper look into the characters surrounding the making of Madame Aema and the glitzy but oppressive film industry of 1980s Chungmuro. At the center is Hee-ran, a superstar of the era, who is furious at a script filled with nudity and vulgar language. She confronts producer Gu Joong-ho (Jin Seon-kyu), demanding to back out, but contractual obligations force her to continue with the project. In retaliation, Gu Joong-ho demotes her to a supporting role and launches a casting call with rookie director Kwak In-woo (Jo Hyun-chul) to find a new Aema, eventually discovering the bold and captivating Joo-ae.

Joo-ae’s declaration “Make me the next Hee-ran” is met with a smirk and the words “Interesting,” from Hee-ran, hinting at a tense rivalry and possibly a deeper connection. As the series unfolds, viewers can expect intense conflict between the fading star and the rising newcomer, clashes between the film’s producers and director, and a gritty look into the chaotic production process.
With detailed period sets, striking costumes, and bold styling, Aema is expected to draw global audiences into the heart of 1980s Chungmuro. Through the story of two women determined to take a stand in their own way, Aema reimagines the legacy of Madame Aema with wit, sass, and sharp social commentary.
Aema will premiere exclusively on Netflix on August 22.
