According to TV Chosun on Sep 2nd, the prosecution arrested Han So-hee’s mother, identified as Shin, on charges of setting up illegal gambling venues.
Reports indicate that Shin had operated 12 gaming centers in Ulsan, Wonju and other locations by using proxy business owners from 2021 until the end of last month.
Customers who visited these gaming centers connected to a gambling website where Shin acted as a distributor, recharging game money to engage in gambling activities like baccarat.
Shin had previously been fined for similar charges and is also known to have a criminal record for fraud.
With Han So-hee now facing public scrutiny due to her mother’s wrongdoings, attention has turned to her previous statements about severing ties with her mother four years ago.
Four years ago, Han So-hee became embroiled in a “debt too” scandal due to her mother, for which she issued an apology. In a statement, she explained, “When I was about five years old, my parents divorced, and my grandmother raised me. After enrolling in high school, I transferred to Ulsan, where my mother lived, but I continued to live with my grandmother. After graduation, I moved to Seoul to pursue this path.“
She added, “Since I did not have frequent contact with my mother, I only became aware of her debts after I turned 20. Out of filial duty, I paid off my mother’s debts as much as I could before my debut.“
In 2022, her mother became involved in another “debt too” scandal. At that time, Han So-hee’s agency, 9ato Entertainment, clarified, “Her mother borrowed money using a bank account in Han So-hee’s name. When Han So-hee was still a minor, her mother opened the account without her knowledge and used it to borrow money.“
The agency emphasized, “Han So-hee has no plans to take responsibility for the related debts. This is to prevent any further exploitation of her name by her mother to borrow money or extort funds, leveraging the fact that her daughter is a famous celebrity.”
They added, “It is true that they cannot sever the bond between mother and daughter. We are sincerely sorry to those who have been harmed. However, we hope that by taking a firm stance, such incidents will not be repeated.”
