On the December 20 broadcast of MBN’s variety show Dongchimi, Ham So Won shared updates about her daily life living with her daughter Hye-jung. During the episode, cameras captured an unfamiliar man waking Hye-jung in the early morning, preparing her breakfast, and checking her school notice board—scenes that surprised both the panelists and viewers.
Seeing this, Kim Yong-man jokingly asked if the man was her new boyfriend. Ham So Won quickly clarified that he was not a romantic partner, but her daughter’s school escort teacher, hired to safely take Hye-jung to school in the mornings.
Ham explained that her demanding work schedule made the arrangement necessary. “I do live broadcasts in China, and they often end around 1 or 2 a.m. By the time I finish cleaning up and showering, it can be 3 or 4 in the morning,” she said. “That’s when I realized I needed someone to help with my daughter’s school mornings.”
She added that she interviewed several candidates, including older women and caregivers, but ultimately allowed her daughter to make the final choice. “Hye-jung chose him herself,” Ham revealed. “He’s a first-year university student, and since the age gap between them is smaller, they communicate really well.” She also noted that there weren’t many applicants, so the options were somewhat limited.
As for why she chose a male escort teacher, Ham So Won explained it was a practical decision. “The escort time is short, but safety is the most important thing. I felt a male teacher would be more suitable for safely getting her to school,” she said, adding that Hye-jung returns home using an academy shuttle bus.
Ham also shared a more emotional perspective, saying the teacher sometimes feels like he fills the absence of a father figure. “When her dad visits occasionally, Hye-jung tells me, ‘Mom, tell Dad to wait outside for me,’” she said. “I think she wants to show him off to her friends.”
Ham So Won married Chinese-born TV personality Jin Hua in 2018, despite their 18-year age difference, and the couple welcomed their daughter the same year. They divorced in December 2022, though Ham previously revealed they continued living together for some time due to their daughter’s education.
By candidly explaining the situation, Ham So Won put rumors to rest, emphasizing that her priority remains her child’s safety and well-being—not dating speculation.
