China’s booming short drama market is opening doors for a new generation of actors, and 1999-born actress Guo Yuhan has quickly emerged as a standout star. With a background in acting from the Central Academy of Drama and early roles in traditional dramas like Till the End of the Moon and The Longest Promise, Guo initially played forgettable supporting characters. But in 2023, she boldly transitioned into the fast-paced world of short dramas.

Despite common stigma labeling short dramas as a platform for “washed-up stars” or “unknowns,” Guo Yuhan found her stride. While these productions are often shot under intense conditions – some in just 7–15 days – they offered her a rare opportunity to play lead roles and truly showcase her range.
Her delicate visuals and expressive acting quickly caught attention. From sweet, innocent girls to cunning heroines seeking revenge, Guo adapted flawlessly, aided by the short format’s stylish costumes, dynamic storytelling, and character-focused scripts.

Her major breakthrough came with Roses in the Summer, co-starring Liu Xiaoxu. The romantic drama about a wealthy arranged marriage turned love story exploded online, reaching 3 billion views within just 18 days. In it, Guo plays Bai Qingmai, a sharp, elegant, and independent photographer who gradually falls for her husband Chu Shinan (Liu Xiaoxu), a wealthy businessman. Their chemistry lit up the screen, earning massive praise.
Critics hailed Guo for her elegant presence, natural performance, and strong emotional delivery – even outperforming several more established young actresses. Her success marked a rare case where a single short drama transformed a career.

Following the drama’s viral success, both Guo and Liu have been in high demand with rising popularity, media interviews, and brand endorsements. Amid a lull in mainstream Chinese television, Roses in the Summer became a national sensation, showing that with the right investment, short dramas can rival traditional series in quality, storytelling, and cultural impact.
Sohu noted that the success of this short drama is a game-changer, proving that well-produced mini-series can resonate with mass audiences and set new industry standards. For Guo Yuhan, it’s only the beginning.
