In an interview on December 2 at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, promoting her upcoming film The People Upstairs (directed by Ha Jung Woo), Gong Hyo Jin reflected on the unique situation of her husband enlisting after their marriage. “It was a special time,” she said. “Counting our dating and married life, we’ve been together for about three years. We got married after two years, and he enlisted before we’d even reached our first anniversary. So it still felt like we were dating.”
She added, “I cried every time we said goodbye and wrote letters. Sometimes it was just overwhelmingly sad knowing he had to go even if we didn’t want it. When else would you cry every time you part ways like that? It’s not like saying, ‘See you in two months’ unless someone’s studying abroad. I think those moments made us even more affectionate.”

Gong also shared that she frequently visited Kevin during his service. “I went to see him a lot. I brought lots of food, even carried a toaster with me. I did everything I could. All of it became part of our memories. I wanted to build those memories together.” She continued, “I’d often drive alone to visit him. He always felt so sorry, especially because it was a two-and-a-half-hour drive each way.”
Reflecting on the experience, she said, “It’s not a situation you can buy with money. It felt like we were a long-distance couple, and in a way, it was nice. At first, I couldn’t believe it I thought he’d be back any day. But later I realized, ‘We’ll never have a time like this again.’ It became a truly special and grateful memory.”

Gong Hyo Jin stars in the upcoming comedy film The People Upstairs, which tells the unpredictable story of two couples the noisy upstairs neighbors (played by Ha Jung Woo and Lee Ha Nee) and the downstairs pair (Gong Hyo Jin and Kim Dong Wook) who end up sharing a dinner together after repeated noise complaints. The film is written, directed, and headlined by Ha Jung Woo.
Gong plays Im Jeong Ah, a curious and candid wife from the downstairs unit, intrigued by her upstairs neighbors’ lifestyle.
The People Upstairs is scheduled for release on December 3.
