Giselle of aespa has become the center of online debate after appearing in a controversial outfit during a recent stage performance.
The singer drew major attention following aespa’s performance of “WDA” on KBS music program Music Bank on May 15.
Shortly after the broadcast aired, videos and screenshots of Giselle’s stage look rapidly spread across online communities, YouTube Shorts, and Korean forums.
Most of the criticism focused on the black leather shorts worn by the idol during the performance. The design, created by fashion brand Namilia, featured a bold low-waist structure resembling exposed string underwear details and reportedly retails for around 189 USD.

Giselle paired the item with a tight-fitting Jean Paul Gaultier jumpsuit decorated with anatomical bone-print graphics.
However, many viewers argued that the combination of both pieces created an uncomfortable visual illusion. Some audiences felt the styling made it appear as though the outfit had slipped too low, causing what they described as an awkward and inappropriate image for a national television broadcast.
Several viewers also commented that the body-print design on the bodysuit unintentionally emphasized certain body contours too strongly, with some critics even comparing the styling to a “fashion mistake” rather than an artistic stage concept.
As criticism intensified online, many netizens blamed aespa’s styling team for selecting an outfit they believed was unsuitable for a public television music show.
Comments included reactions such as: “I genuinely don’t understand what the stylist was thinking,” “This doesn’t feel fashionable, it just feels uncomfortable,” and “This is one of the strangest K-pop stage outfits I’ve ever seen.”
Despite the backlash, others defended Giselle and her team, arguing that the controversy was being exaggerated.
Some fans pointed out that the idol was still fully covered underneath with a bodysuit and did not actually reveal anything inappropriate. Others argued that bold and experimental styling has long been common in global performance fashion and that the outfit only appeared controversial because of camera angles and optical illusions.

Many fans also emphasized that, given aespa’s current level of success and influence, the members likely have significant input regarding their personal styling and stage image. Because of this, some netizens argued that placing all the blame solely on the stylist was unfair.
The ongoing debate surrounding Giselle’s outfit once again highlights how K-pop stage fashion continues to divide public opinion.
While some audiences appreciate daring concepts and individuality, others still expect idols to maintain more restrained styling choices, especially during broadcasts on mainstream television programs.
