Two words that seem perpetually out of reach for Gillian Chung are “true happiness.” Once a beloved pop idol and member of the iconic Cantopop duo TWINS, her life has been marked by public scandal, heartbreak, betrayal, and more recently, quiet strength.

A Life Scarred by Scandal & Heartbreak

In 2008, Gillian’s image as a pure and innocent star shattered overnight when explicit photos involving actor Edison Chen and several female celebrities, Gillian included, were leaked. The photo scandal stunned the Chinese entertainment industry and left Gillian’s career and love life in ruins.

Dubbed the “woman no one dares to marry” by tabloids, she suffered from constant judgment and rejection. Despite dating several high-profile men, including tycoons and celebrities, none of the relationships led to a lasting union.

In 2018, Gillian seemed to find stability, marrying Taiwanese doctor Michael Lai, whom she met via friends’ matchmaking, after eight months of dating. However, the dream unraveled quickly. Just 14 months after their wedding, they announced their divorce. Rumors of Lai’s infidelity and exploitation during their lavish wedding circulated widely.

By May 2021, their divorce was finalized. When asked why he left Gillian, Lai candidly blamed the excessive interest of the media and his ex-wife’s fame, stating, “Our marriage was ruined by the public gaze.”

Betrayed by a Younger Lover

In late 2024, another storm broke: Gillian was embroiled in a messy scandal involving Yu Yanlong, a singer 19 years her junior. According to entertainment bloggers, Gillian pursued Yu, unaware he was still in a relationship. Yu not only accepted her affection and financial support but also leaked intimate messages and photos from their time together, despite Gillian’s previously refuting their relationship.

Friends of Gillian defended her, saying she was tricked into the relationship. According to this friend, Yu Yanlong lied about having broken up, causing Gillian Chung to believe Yu was single and reportedly spent significant amounts of money on him, which he allegedly shared with his actual girlfriend.

The betrayal climaxed when Yu and his partner used Gillian’s private content to blackmail her. When Gillian discovered the truth, she immediately ended the relationship.

Now A Wealthy Single Lady

Now 44, Gillian Chung is no longer chasing love. Appearing recently on the show “Amazing Friends”, she revealed her new 200-square-meter luxury apartment in Beijing—just one among several properties she owns across China. Her net worth is estimated at over 100 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 13 million USD).

Having endured a series of painful relationships, Gillian has made a firm decision: she will never remarry. “Once is enough,” she shared, adding, “Marriage just isn’t for me.”

Still, her desire for motherhood remains unfulfilled. “I really want a child to keep me company,” the star confessed, adding that although she had frozen her eggs in preparation, she never had the chance to become a mother during her brief marriage. Now approaching her 50s, Gillian knows the risks of late pregnancy but still harbors hope.
