(G)I-DLE’s Provocative Lyrics in “Wife” Face Mixed Reactions

On January 22, (G)I-DLE unveiled the track “Wife” from their upcoming 2nd full-length album [2]. A music video was also released, featuring the members donning mint-colored wigs and wearing T-shirts with the word “Wife”, at the same time delivering a powerful dance performance.

Amidst the enchanting beats and deep melody, however, the attention has turned to the somewhat provocative lyrics of “Wife”:

“I just made some cake / But that’s not enough, pick the cherry on top / Kiss carefully and eat boldly (Ow!) / Tell me how it taste”

“Littlе touch on my tongue / Ah, you can wipe it everywhere / But don’t touch delicate lips / From head to toe, just chop, chop, chop / If you get it now, you should try it now.”

“If do it well, it would be full for this meal / Swallow it deeper because I feel good”

These metaphorical and sexy lyrics, combined with hip-hop sounds, add a fresh charm to the song.

However, as (G)I-DLE has many underage fans, some pointed out that some of the lyrics could be interpreted with sexual connotations, raising concerns about their appropriateness.

Netizens expressed mixed reactions, with some saying, “The lyrics are a bit suggestive, but all the members are adults, and they have been in the industry for a while. What’s the problem with the suggestive lyrics? The song is good,” and others commenting, “Let’s report to the Korea Communications Standards Commission. What kind of lyrics are these?”

Other comments, such as “The issue is not that the lyrics are explicit; it’s that these explicit lyrics weren’t given a 19+ rating,” “The lyrics are suggestive, but it’s refreshing,”  and “The lyrics are explicit, but the music video is cute”, also appeared.

On the other hand, (G)I-DLE is set to release their 2nd full-length album [2] on January 29 at 6 PM through various online music platforms.
