Japanese singer-actor Fukuyama Masaharu, often dubbed “Japan’s Jung Woo-sung”, is at the center of a growing controversy after admitting his involvement in a series of inappropriate social gatherings that included at least 19 female announcers and a former Fuji TV executive.
What’s Happened?
According to a report by Josei Seven on August 18, the scandal came to light during Fuji TV’s internal investigation launched in the wake of a high-profile sexual assault case involving Nakai Masahiro. The probe revealed that Fukuyama was listed as a “key guest” in regular social meetings hosted by former Fuji TV executive Ota Ryo dating back to 2005.
During these gatherings, female announcers alleged that Fukuyama made crude sexual jokes, which were supported and echoed by the executive, creating an uncomfortable and inappropriate environment. Several of the women, speaking as part of the investigation, confirmed the sexually charged nature of these meetings.
Fukuyama has since admitted to making sexually suggestive comments during the gatherings. In a statement released via X (formerly Twitter), the 56-year-old said:
“I deeply regret my actions. While I initially refrained from speaking publicly to avoid speculation or harm to others, I have now chosen to cooperate fully with interviews to ensure clarity.”

He continued:
“I feel truly sorry for the discomfort and concern this has caused my fans. I also urge everyone to refrain from identifying or attacking those who had the courage to speak up during the investigation.”
Revered Actor Now Facing Fallout
Known in South Korea for his role in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s 2013 Like Father, Like Son, which screened at the Busan International Film Festival, Fukuyama has long been regarded as one of Japan’s top stars, alongside Kimura Takuya. His reputation for sophistication and charm has now been heavily tarnished by the recent revelations.

The scandal has sparked shock and disappointment among fans and the public, particularly given Fukuyama’s clean public image and high standing in the entertainment industry. Discussions on Japanese social media and fan communities have been overwhelmingly critical, calling for accountability and deeper examination of corporate-media ties.
As the investigation into Fuji TV continues, and more details emerge, the implications for both Fukuyama’s career and the network’s internal culture remain under intense scrutiny.
