Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, who suspended her acting career due to tax evasion charges, made her first public appearance after 5 years.
Fan Bingbing attended the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany on Feb 23rd (local time). The movie “Green Night” starring Fan Bingbing and Lee Joo Young was invited to the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival, and Fan Bingbing appeared on the world stage after a long time.
When Fan Bingbing, who attended the press conference following the photo call, received a question related to the 2018 tax evasion controversy, the host stopped the reporters by saying, “Please refrain from asking questions unrelated to the movie.” However, Fan Bingbing replied, “It’s fine. I was at home, and I’d like to thank all my fans worldwide for being concerned about me.” At that time, as China’s top star Fan Bingbing suddenly disappeared, rumors of death or imprisonment spread, but she paid a huge amount of taxes and fines then returned after a period of self-reflection.
She drew attention by directly mentioning the controversy, “I was dealing with some things, but you know, everybody’s life has highs and lows, and when you reach a low, you steadily, gradually climb back up again. It’s a tough process, but you learn a lot of new things at the same time and a lot about the world and a lot about people. For me, it was a very good experience in retrospect. Everything’s fine with me now.”
Fan Bingbing shared, “I’m back to Berlin a dozen or so years later and it’s like a restart for me. Acting is something I’ll probably be doing for my whole life. It’s quite cruel on you if you don’t act for five years, because I love performing. So from that point of view, it’s been a very precious chance for me, and if you talk about it as a challenge I just felt that I had to use 120% of my ability to do it right and to repay the director for her trust in me.”
The movie “Green Night” starring Fan Bingbing and Lee Joo Young follows Chinese immigrant Jin Xia (Fan Bingbing) who works at the security checkpoint of the Seoul airport, dresses practically and does her duty; and a younger, more extroverted woman (Lee Joo Young) who involves Jin Xia in her crooked dealings as it becomes clear that the two have more in common than meets the eye.
Meanwhile, Fan Bingbing was kicked out of the entertainment industry in May 2018 after her tax evasion incident broke out. The Chinese authorities ordered Fan Bingbing to pay 880 million yuan (about 150.9 billion won) in tax and penalties.
