Recently, during her performance at the 2024 VMAs, Lisa once again became embroiled in controversy and faced lip-syncing accusations at the 2024 Global Citizen Festival. While performing the song Moonlit Floor, Lisa was suspected of lip-syncing instead of live singing. Close-up shots circulated by netizens allegedly showed her lip movements not matching the lyrics, and at times, she even appeared to stop singing altogether. Additionally, Moonlit Floor has faced criticism from some online communities due to accusations of plagiarism, as the song’s melody bears similarities to Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer.
Following a series of controversies on social media, many comments from audience members who attended the event in person have come to Lisa’s defense. From the VMAs to Global Citizen, many attendees uploaded live clips from the stage to prove that Lisa did not lip-sync.
Among them, an American actor posted a video “reviewing” the youngest BLACKPINK member’s performance and emphasized that there was no lip-syncing: “I just attended Global Citizen at Central Park. I got to see Lisa, and it was an incredible night. Lisa never fails to impress and energize her audience. The lineup was filled with amazing names like Tyla, Doja Cat, Rauw Alejandro, and Lisa owned her stage.
She performed with great confidence. You don’t know how amazing it is to hear Lisa sing live. She knew how to use her strengths to make the performance perfect. Don’t say she was lip-syncing. That was a backtrack, and Doja Cat also used a backtrack throughout her set. Lisa is a talented woman, and her new song is fantastic—it made me want to cry.”
Regarding the plagiarism allegations, the original artist has personally taken action to “shut down” the rumors. Specifically, the lead singer of Sixpence None The Richer, the band behind Kiss Me, posted about Lisa’s performance at Global Citizen and shared: “It’s amazing that our song is being appreciated by the younger generation. Lisa did a great job with this new version. We’re excited to meet the new fans of Kiss Me on our upcoming fall tour.”
Despite the defense from the original artist and festival-goers, Lisa is still facing a wave of intense criticism from netizens. Posts on platforms like X (Twitter) and youth-oriented social media in South Korea have been filled with overwhelmingly negative reactions toward Lisa. They claim that such obvious lip-syncing at a large-scale international music event is unacceptable. Some even left harsh comments like “the lip-sync queen” and “insincere lip-syncing.”
When performing with BLACKPINK, Lisa is always praised as a skilled idol, receiving compliments for her vocals, rap, and dance due to her professionalism. However, standing alone on a big stage, Lisa had to “command a vast space.” Her nervousness and moments of lacking confidence, using a backtrack to cover up parts where she was out of breath, inadvertently made her the target of unprecedented criticism while performing on stage.
Lisa is set to perform at the prestigious Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show soon. This event will draw all eyes to her, as it marks the brand’s return after six years. Surely, BLACKPINK’s youngest member will need to improve her skills quickly to deliver a complete performance at such a significant career milestone.
