Psychiatrist Yang Jae Woong, known to K-Pop fans as EXID Hani’s fiancé, has finally addressed the tragic death of a patient at W Jin Hospital in an exclusive interview with Hankyoreh.
The patient, who had been admitted for a diet pill addiction, passed away after two weeks of treatment, sparking widespread public outrage, particularly following an interview with the patient’s mother by Dispatch. In light of the backlash, Yang and Hani decided to postpone their wedding.
In the interview, Yang expressed remorse, stating, “This is a very unfortunate and regretful incident. As the hospital director, I feel a deep sense of responsibility.” He emphasized that the hospital has reflected on its procedures to prevent such occurrences in the future, insisting that the staff’s actions were necessary and not neglectful.
Yang clarified that he was not directly involved in the patient’s care, as he only manages outpatient services. He explained that the patient’s admission was arranged through another attending physician without prior consultation with him.
Regarding the use of isolation and restraint, Yang detailed that these measures are guided by the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s protocols, intended for situations where there is a risk of self-harm or harm to others. He acknowledged the need for improved communication and staff training in emergency responses, particularly after the criticism regarding the quality of CPR administered during the incident.
While Yang claimed that the hospital had apologized to the bereaved family, he also noted that threats made by family members toward hospital staff complicated the situation, making it difficult for him to approach them personally.
In response to criticisms about issuing an apology through his management agency, he explained that it was necessary due to the media scrutiny surrounding the case.
Yang reiterated his heartfelt condolences to the family, expressing a desire to meet with them privately to extend his apologies without media interference. He acknowledged the challenges faced by mental health facilities, especially following this tragic incident, and expressed hope that it would not lead to a broader negative perception of psychiatric care.
Notably, the interview did not touch on Yang’s relationship with Hani or the status of their wedding plans.
