Esther Yu, one of China’s rising young stars, is admired not only for her acting career but also for her elegant image as a “rich, pretty girl” from an elite family.
However, that flawless image is now being questioned as Chinese social media is flooded with suspicions about her family’s business dealings, sparking widespread controversy.
“Rich Heiress” to Scandal Magnet?
Born in 1995 in Shanghai, Esther Yu comes from a wealthy background. Her grandfather once served as the chairman of the labor union in steel industry, and her father also runs a private steel business.

Yu rose to fame through the idol survival show Youth With You 2, charming viewers with her quirky humor and straightforward speech. She continued to flourish in TV dramas and brand endorsements, maintaining a clean, scandal-free image until her name became entangled in a swirl of investigations tied to favoritism, corruption, and nepotism.
Family Ties, Tenders, and Court Orders
Recently, Chinese netizens uncovered old reports and documents suggesting a conflict of interest: Yu’s grandfather held an influential public position in the state-run steel industry while her father’s private firm was operating in the same field. Under China’s civil service laws, such family overlap is generally prohibited to prevent misuse of influence.

Between 2009 and 2014, Yu’s father’s company reportedly merged with the state steel enterprise, securing key contracts worth an estimated 1.5 billion RMB (~$208 million USD). These deals coincided with her grandfather’s active tenure, raising alarms about potential insider advantages and bid-rigging.
The private company was dissolved in 2014, and some involved parties were later investigated, though no official verdict has been made public. Speculation remains: Was this a serious case of corruption swept under the rug?

Adding to the storm, her father allegedly engaged in usurious lending, with records showing over 50 million RMB (~$7 million USD) in loans and 13 million RMB in interest, which led to a court enforcement order in 2018. Another similar court order surfaced in 2023, involving a person with the same name, fueling more doubts about lingering financial risks in the family.
Silent Response and Disappearing Posts
As discussions surged online, Esther Yu has maintained complete silence, which some fans interpret as an avoidance tactic. At the same time, posts related to the family scandal began disappearing from Chinese platforms, raising suspicions of media censorship.
So far, Yu’s reputation in the industry remains intact. But the long-term implications could be serious. In an era when the public expects transparency and accountability from celebrities, prolonged silence could backfire, especially if more details come to light.

For someone who built her brand as an innocent and scandal-free idol, these allegations whether proven or not cast a long shadow. The public may not forgive or forget easily, particularly when privilege and ethics collide.
