Born in 1995 in Shanghai, Esther Yu comes from a wealthy background. Her grandfather once served as the chairman of the labor union in steel industry, and her father also runs a private steel business.

Recently, Chinese netizens uncovered old reports and documents suggesting a conflict of interest: Yu’s grandfather held an influential public position in the state-run steel industry while her father’s private firm was operating in the same field. Under China’s civil service laws, such family overlap is generally prohibited to prevent misuse of influence.
Between 2009 and 2014, Yu’s father’s company reportedly merged with the state steel enterprise, securing key contracts worth an estimated 1.5 billion RMB (~$208 million USD). These deals coincided with her grandfather’s active tenure, raising alarms about potential insider advantages and bid-rigging.
