Employee Who Illegally Accessed BTS RM’s Personal Data Reinstated At KORAIL After Final Appeal

The KORAIL employee who observed RM’s personal information without permission has returned to work

On December 22nd, Dispatch reported that Democratic Party of Korea member Kim Doo-gwan had released a review decision of the National Labor Relations Commission submitted by the Korean Railway Corporation (KORAIL). Accordingly, the National Labor Relations Commission ordered A, who had been fired, to return to work and pay them regular wages.

While working at KORAIL as an information technology development, A secretly accessed RM’s personal information, including flight tickets, home addresses and mobile phone numbers, for three years from 2019.

According to Article 3 of the Personal Information Protection Act, customer personal data should only be used for service processing when necessary. In principle, it is prohibited to access such data for non-business purposes.

KORAIL found out about A’s misconduct in an internal audit. It is known that A also saw the personal information of other employees apart from RM. Due to this incident, A was fired in April.

A objected to the decision and applied for an appeal but got rejected due to the seriousness of their wrongdoing. However, the National Labor Relations Commission reversed the decision and reinstated A.
