Emma Stone Confirms Role in Hollywood Remake of a Box Office Failure in Korea

Emma Stone will be starring in the US remake of the Korean movie "Save the Green Planet!" (2003)

Ko Kyung-beom, head of CJ ENM’s film division, met with Max Movie at the Cannes Film Festival on the morning of May 20th and revealed, “Emma Stone will star in the Hollywood remake of ‘Save the Green Planet!’, titled ‘Bugonia’, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Filming is scheduled to start in July.”

He added, “I met Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone at Cannes. We’ve been preparing for this project for a long time, and it’s finally official.”

Director Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone were invited to the 77th Cannes Film Festival competition section as director and lead actress for “Kind of Kindness”, which officially premiered on May 17th.

This marks the fourth feature film collaboration between the two, following “The Favourite” in 2019, this year’s releases “Poor Things” and “Kind of Kindness”, and now “Bugonia”.

The original “Save the Green Planet!” was the directorial debut of Jang Joon-hwan in 2003, starring Shin Ha-kyun and Baek Yoon-sik. It is a black comedy about Byung-gu (Shin Ha-kyun), who believes the president of a chemical company (Baek Yoon-sik) is an alien and kidnaps and tortures him.

Although it only attracted 70,000 viewers at its release and was a box office failure, it gained praise over time for its imaginative storytelling and unexpected ending, earning the label of a “tragic masterpiece.”

The film was recognized for its artistry, winning awards at various international film festivals such as the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

The remake “Bugonia” depicts the story of two men obsessed with a conspiracy theory who believe the CEO of a pharmaceutical company is an alien intending to destroy Earth and decide to kidnap him.

CJ ENM said, “Will Tracy, who participated in writing HBO’s ‘Succession’, joined the script development,” adding, “Many famous Hollywood actors have expressed interest in participating in this remake project.”

The Hollywood Reporter, the official newsletter of the film festival, also reported, “Just a day after the release of Lanthimos’ latest film at Cannes, his new film ‘Bugonia’ was announced, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.”
