KBS 2TV’s weekend drama “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” broadcast on May 12th showed the dramatic reunition of Park Do-ra (Im Soo-hyang), who lives under the name Kim Ji-young, and Go Pil-seung (Ji Hyun-woo), who officially debuted as a director.
After making an extreme choice, Do-ra was miraculously saved by Lee Soon-jung (Lee Joon-sil), a grandmother in her neighborhood. However, Soon-jung mistook Do-ra for her granddaughter Kim Ji-young, and upon knowing Do-ra’s severe condition, she paid for Do-ra to get full-body reconstruction surgery. Waking from the surgery, Do-ra could not remember anything so far. At that moment, Soon-jung said to Do-ra, “Your name is Kim Ji-young. You’re Lee Soon-jung’s granddaughter”, indicating that Do-ra would be living as Kim Ji-young now.
In the previous broadcast, viewers were all surprised to see top actress Park Do-ra making an extreme choice after losing her fame.
Do-ra found herself in a situation where she had to rely on chaebol Gong Jin-dan(Go Yoon) to repay the gambling debts of her mother Baek Mi-ja’s (Cha Hwa-yeon). Under the hands of her mother, Park Do-ra debuted as a child actress and has been acting for 15 years. She’s the breadwinner of her family.
Baek Mi-ja tried to hand over her daughter to Gong Jin-dan, who was obsessed with Do-ra, and even suggests Do-ra become a nude photo model to earn a large sum of money. In order to repay her mother’s debt, Do-ra agreed to take the nude shoot but she couldn’t hold it in and eventually ran out of the studio. Seeing Do-ra throwing up out of anger due to the unbelievable reality, Mi-ja asked Gong Jin-dan for help.
Later, Do-ra told Go Pil-seung (Ji Hyun-woo) about her engagement with Gong Jin-dan and said goodbye to him. Do-ra decided to get engaged to Gong Jin-dan to repay her mother’s debt but canceled it in the end. Therefore, Gong Jin-dan accused Do-ra of receiving sponsorship. This scandal ended Do-ra’s career and she threw herself into the sea.
Upon hearing the news of Do-ra’s death, Pil-seung got panicked. Feeling guilty for not being able to save Do-ra, he went to the sea and sobbed.
The broadcast reportedly reached 18.3% and broke its own viewership record. The drama also ranked No.1 among Sunday programs, proving its rising popularity.
Despite its success in ratings, some viewers are expressing concerns over “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” presenting an unconventional development amid the characters’ conflict cliché before going halfway through its 50-episode broadcast.
After only a few episodes, viewers are pouring complaints over provocative materials and absurd developments that do not suit a weekend drama which is often watched by family members of all ages together. Many pointed out that “Beauty and Mr. Romantic” is repeating the problems of a failed drama with the portrayal of unethical parents and suggestive details.
