The Butterfly Lovers is a timeless classic in Chinese cinema and television. Over the years, many adaptations have been made, but the 2000 version starring Noel Leung and the 2007 adaptation featuring Dong Jie remain the most memorable.
Both actresses rose to fame portraying the beloved character Zhu Yingtai, yet their personal and professional journeys diverged dramatically.
Noel Leung: A Fulfilling Life with Liang Shanbo
Born in 1969 in Macau, Noel Leung gained fame after placing second at the 1990 Miss Hong Kong pageant. She became a familiar face in historical TV dramas such as Fate Of The Last Empire, Against the Blade of Honour, The Hitman Chronicles, The Heroes From Shaolin, The Duke of Mount Deer 1998.

Dong Jie began her career with a lead role in Zhang Yimou’s Happy Times, quickly gaining attention for her beauty and acting talent. She later starred in prominent productions such as Sky Lovers (2002), The Story of a Noble Family (2003), Endless Love (2004), 2046 (2004) and Dragon Tiger Gate (2006).
Her 2007 portrayal of Zhu Yingtai in The Butterfly Lovers marked a career peak. Dong Jie transformed the character from a demure young lady into a spirited, witty, and decisive woman, earning praise as “the most beautiful Zhu Yingtai on screen.”
However, her personal life later eclipsed her professional achievements. Dong Jie married actor Pan Yueming in 2008, but the couple divorced amid scandal in 2012. Allegations of an affair with actor Wang Dazhi emerged, with intimate photos circulating online, labeling her a home-wrecker.
