Following black Ariel in “The Little Mermaid,” Disney has now introduced a new black character in the upcoming live-action film “Peter Pan & Wendy”.
The new character posters feature Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook, Tiger Lily, Mr. Smee, John, Michael, Tootles, The Twins, Curly, Slightly, Bellweather, and Nibs.
The standout character that particularly captures the attention is Tinker Bell, who is played by Yara Shahidi.
Shahidi was born to an African-American mother and an Iranian father. Her dark skin and exotic appearance are quite different from the traditional image of Tinker Bell, who is typically depicted as a white, blonde fairy.
Netizens were surprised by the new interpretation of Tinker Bell and took to social media to express their opinions, with some referencing the controversy surrounding the black Ariel in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid”.
In addition to Tinker Bell, Jude Law also stars as Captain Hook, bringing a fresh interpretation to the classic villain. Law’s portrayal of Captain Hook is vastly different from his usual roles, as he sports a rugged look with a beard and a scar.
“Peter Pan & Wendy” tells the story of Wendy Darling, a young girl who is afraid of leaving her home and sets off on a magical adventure to Neverland with the forever young Peter Pan, his small fairy friend Tinker Bell, and his group of Lost Boys. Along the way, they encounter the notorious pirate Captain Hook and embark on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change their lives forever.
The film is set to be released on Disney+ on April 28th.
