Dior faces backlash over racially insensitive ad in China

Chinese netizens are angry about a Dior ad.

On April 12th, Dior’s recently released ad photo spread on Chinese social media. An Asian model in the photo is pulling up her eyelid with her finger.

This gesture is generally interpreted as a racially discriminatory act in which Westerners insult Asians. A man who made the same gesture to Son Heung Min during a game received a three-year ban from accessing the stadium.

Chinese netizens responded, “Dior has ignored Asians again,” “Dior is testing the limit,” and “I will buy no more Dior for life.”

Chinese media and netizens also raised suspicions of “racial discrimination” against Dior in 2021. At that time, a photo of a East Asian female model in a Qing dynasty traditional costume holding a Dior bag with her eyes narrowed was exhibited at the “Lady Dior” exhibition.
