A week after the tragic funeral of Diogo Jota, the pain remains raw for his loved ones, teammates, and fans. On a somber day at Anfield, the late footballer’s wife, Rute Cardoso, was seen clutching their two young children as she visited a growing memorial of flowers, scarves, jerseys, and heartfelt messages left by fans from around the world.

The 28-year-old widow, who had just married Jota less than two weeks before his untimely death, stood quietly in front of the sea of tributes, with her face marked by grief, yet filled with strength. Alongside her were Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Darwin Núñez, and newly appointed manager Arne Slot, who all brought floral wreaths to honor their deceased teammate.

The memorial visit follows the emotional funeral held in Portugal for Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva, both of whom died in a horrific car crash on July 3rd near Zamora, Spain. Reports revealed that Jota, 28, was driving a rented Lamborghini when a suspected tire explosion caused the vehicle to ignite, killing both men. Jota had been advised not to fly due to a recent lung surgery, and was attempting to return to the UK by ferry.

Just 11 days before the tragedy, Jota and Rute celebrated their long-awaited wedding in an intimate ceremony surrounded by loved ones. The fairytale quickly turned into a nightmare, shaking the football community to its core.

Liverpool will hold a moment of silence and a performance of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during their upcoming friendly match against Preston North End this Sunday, paying tribute to both Jota and his brother.

The funeral, held on July 5th, was attended by a wide range of figures from across football, including current and former teammates like Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Portugal national team stars Bruno Fernandes, João Félix, and Bernardo Silva. Liverpool captain Van Dijk and Robertson led the procession, carrying floral wreaths shaped with the brothers’ shirt numbers: #20 for Jota and #30 for Andre Silva.

Messages of condolence poured in from around the globe, from UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, football clubs, to cultural icons like Oasis and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal’s national team coach Roberto Martinez shared a powerful reflection, saying, “These are truly, deeply sad days. But today, we saw the strength of the football family – we are united. The spirit of Diogo and Andre will live on in our hearts.”

Although the funeral was private, the ceremony was broadcast to mourners outside the church, allowing thousands to grieve together. The local priest, Father Gondomar, summed up the mood best, “There are no words, only emotions. We suffer with you.”
