Contrary to other Korean actors and actresses who have collaborated one or twice, Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun have worked together for 3 projects already.
In over two decades, Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun have gone from siblings to on-screen lovers in their various shared works.
Beautiful Days (2001)
21 years ago, Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun met on the set of the SBS drama “Beautiful Days”. While Lee Byung Hun was already a big name at the time and had won Best Actor at the 1996 Baeksang Arts Awards, Shin Min Ah was a rookie who just made her transformation from model to actress. In this series, Lee Byung Hun played the male lead Lee Min Chul, and Shin Min Ah starred as his little sister Lee Min Ji.
Despite her character being a supporting one, Shin Min Ah actually played a rather important role in the series. She also interacted a lot with Lee Byung Hun and greatly impacted the storyline, making for a notable collaboration.
A Bittersweet Life (2005)
4 years since playing the siblings of “Beautiful Days”, Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun reunited in the 2005 movie “A Bittersweet Life”, this time with a more vague relationship. Once again, Shin Min Ah was playing a minor character that contributed hugely to the plot, while Lee Byung Hun was the leading male actor. In this movie, Shin Min Ah assumes the role of Hee Soo, a mistress of the boss of Kim Sun Woo, or Lee Byung Hun’s character.
In “A Bittersweet Life”, there’s no clear definition for the relationship between the two’s characters. In particular, Kim Sun Woo was lenient towards Hee Soo, and even went against his boss’s order to torture her. Many people suspected that he had feelings for Hee Soo, however, there was no further scene that explored the two’s relationship. As “A Bittersweet Life” was more focused on eye-pleasing action scenes, the love line was largely left open.
Our Blues (2022)
After 17 years, Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun finally reunited in the star-studded omnibus K-drama “Our Blues”. For those who shipped the two in “A Bittersweet Life”, this would be great news seeing that “Our Blues” had a more romantic tone. Nevertheless, the romance between Lee Dong Seok and Min Seon Ah, or Lee Byung Hun and Shin Min Ah’s characters, was an extremely bumpy ride. They used to be classmates with affections for each other, but drifted apart as Lee Dong Seok stayed in Jeju, while Min Seon Ah left and got married.
Of course, a destined couple would find their way back together, and after her unhappy marriage and failing mental health, Min Seon Ah finally found her way back to Lee Dong Seok’s arms. In this third collaboration, Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun did not hesitate to show an overwhelming and convincing chemistry, and finally fell in love on screen after their first shared project 21 years ago.
To co-star together in so many works, perhaps the stars are aligned for Shin Min Ah and Lee Byung Hun on the screen. To go from siblings, lackey and boss’s mistress, to lovers, the two have truly gone a long way. Still, netizens pose the question of whether there would be a 4th time.
