Park Chan-wook’s film No Other Choice has been nominated in three categories at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, sparking excitement in the Korean film industry about its prospects.

On December 8 (local time), at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, the nominees for the Golden Globe Awards were announced. The Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are regarded alongside the Academy Awards as one of the most prestigious film ceremonies in the U.S., often seen as an indicator of potential Oscar winners since it precedes the Oscars by one or two months.

The Korean film that drew significant attention is No Other Choice, which earned nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Lee Byung-hun).

The Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category includes six nominees: No Other Choice, Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, Nouvelle Vague, and One Battle After Another.

Lee Byung-hun is up against internationally acclaimed actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), George Clooney (Jay Kelly), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) for the Best Actor award.

For Best Foreign Language Film, No Other Choice was nominated alongside It Was an Ordinary Accident, Secret Agent, Cirath, and The Voice of Hind.

This marks Park Chan-wook’s return to the Golden Globes after three years, following Decision to Leave, which failed to secure a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Korea has previously celebrated historic wins with Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which won Best Foreign Language Film in 2020, and Minari’s win in 2020, while Squid Game earned recognition in TV acting categories.

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony will be held on January 11 in Los Angeles.

No Other Choice tells the story of Mansu (Lee Byung-hun), a company employee who, after being unexpectedly fired, prepares for a personal battle to protect his family and keep his house while pursuing reemployment. The film received critical acclaim starting with its invitation to the competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival the first Korean film in 13 years to do so followed by audience awards at the Toronto International Film Festival and a Special Tribute Award for Lee Byung-hun.
