Daesang Winning Actor Took Hiatus For 5 Years As Acting Seemed Like His “Part-time Job”

He first started acting as Hamlet in the play Hamlet in 1986. His debut was in the 1996 film “Glass,” in which he earned the public’s attention by playing a Buddhist monk who breaks the taboos. It was also the first Korean film to be selected for Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week. Thanks to this role, he received the Best New Actor Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards. It’s none other than actor Park Shin-yang.

Park made consecutive big hits in 1997 and 1998 with “The Letter” and “A Promise,” rising to fame as a melodrama star in the 1990s and winning popularity and best actor awards at various film festivals. In 1998, he starred in the SBS drama “Fascinate My Heart” with Kim Nam-joo, in which he played Yoon Suk-chan, a surgical resident from a prestigious university, and gained the nickname “star of the youth memories” with a friendly yet gentle charm.

Later, he caused a syndrome with the drama “Lovers in Paris” and was recognized for his acting ability and star quality at the same time. He received the grand prize (Daesang) at the SBS Drama Awards along with his co-star Kim Jong-un for “Lovers in Paris.”

After a long hiatus, he solidified his position in 2007 with favorable reviews for the drama “War of Money,” showing his solidarity in returning to the small screen after three years. This drama marked the second time he won a Daesang at the SBS Drama Awards. The following year, the drama won Best Picture at the Baeksang Arts Awards, and the actor himself won the Best Actor Award in the TV category.

Appearing in the drama “My Lawyer, Mr. Jo,” he showed why he is “a nation’s actor,” making it No. 1 in ratings. He appeared in the second season of “My Lawyer, Mr. Jo” in 2019. Park Shin-yang, who captivated viewers with his outstanding acting skills, has not been seen in the entertainment industry since 2019. He shared the news on Jan. 1, 2024 “I’ve been immersed in drawing for 10 years. I’ve been doing movies or dramas from time to time.”

As a result, he has selected 131 out of 400 paintings he created over the past 10 years and has been holding an exhibition titled The Fourth Wall at the Emart Center in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province since December 19. He also published a book with the same name with the philosopher Kim Dong-hoon.
