CORTIS controversy
CORTIS controversy

On January 10, the Golden Disc Awards took place in Taiwan (China), wrapping up a vibrant year for K-pop in 2025. Often dubbed the “Korean Grammy Awards,” the event welcomed tens of thousands of fans and featured a star-studded lineup including Jennie, IVE, Stray Kids, LE SSERAFIM, ALLDAY PROJECT, and CORTIS.

However, amid the celebration, CORTIS unexpectedly found itself at the center of controversy. A short clip circulating rapidly on X captured NCT WISH’s Riku performing a cover of EXO’s hit song Love Shot. While Riku’s performance drew attention, it was James of CORTIS whose reaction sparked heated debate online.

In the viral clip, James was seen pouting his lips, narrowing his eyes, and displaying exaggerated facial expressions while watching Riku perform. Many netizens interpreted his reaction as mocking or dismissive toward a senior idol, especially inappropriate given the scale and prestige of the Golden Disc Awards.

Critics argued that such visible expressions on camera could easily be perceived as lacking basic courtesy. Several comments pointed out that rookies appearing alongside senior artists should be particularly cautious about their on-screen behavior to avoid misunderstandings or negative impressions.

This is not the first time James has been embroiled in similar criticism. At the Asia Artist Awards (AAA) in late November last year, his facial expressions during Ahyeon’s live vocal performance also went viral. As Ahyeon delivered powerful high notes with strong microphone projection, James was seen grimacing and reacting visibly. The moment sparked mixed reactions, with some viewers criticizing Ahyeon’s vocal tone while others focused solely on James’ inability to manage his expressions.

James subsequently received significant backlash for failing to control his reactions during a live broadcast, with many calling his behavior unprofessional.

As the controversy surrounding James had yet to settle, netizens resurfaced another clip involving Keonho, another member of CORTIS. In a video from Show! Music Core in September last year, Keonho appeared to purse his lips when aespa was announced as the winner. The brief moment was quickly scrutinized, with viewers accusing him of displaying displeasure toward senior female idols.

With two members repeatedly embroiled in controversies over facial expressions, CORTIS’ public image has taken a noticeable hit. While some fans have stepped forward to defend the group—arguing that these moments may have been accidental or misinterpreted—others stress that idols, especially rookies, are constantly under scrutiny and must be mindful of their reactions in public settings.

As discussions continue, the situation highlights how even fleeting expressions can spark major debate in the highly sensitive world of K-pop.
