Controversy Surrounds The Cover of The Weeknd’s Upcoming Single “KPOP”

The Weeknd has teased a new single titled “KPOP,” but the cover has caused confusion.

On the upcoming July 21st (local time), Travis Scott, Bad Bunny, and The Weeknd are scheduled to release a collaboration single titled “KPOP.” They are actively promoting the song by sharing the “KPOP” cover on their respective social media platforms.

However, some netizens pointed out that the “KPOP” cover bears a resemblance to the rising sun flag, a symbol associated with Japan, and does not align with the meaning of KPOP, representing Korean pop music.

Moreover, the lyrics of “KPOP” are unrelated to actual K-pop music, leading to a controversy over noise marketing.

Nevertheless, other netizens speculated that since The Weeknd has previously expressed being a fan of K-pop, he may not have engaged in noise marketing intentionally to stir controversy.

The Weeknd has openly stated his appreciation for K-pop artists’ music on his social media, even sharing proof of himself enjoying their songs. He recently posted on his story that he was streaming NewJeans’ “Super Shy.”

He also co-produced and starred in HBO’s drama “The Idol”, which gained attention as BLACKPINK Jennie’s acting debut.

However, “The Idol” received heavy criticism for its provocative content, including excessive exposure of actresses, profanity, drug use, and explicit sexual scenes.
