The lavish yet controlled lives of the heirs to Macau’s casino empire continue to grip Chinese media—and at the center of the storm is Conroy Chan, actor and son-in-law to tycoon Stanley Ho’s daughter, Josie Ho.
Once known as the “Kimura Takuya of Hong Kong”, Conroy was adored for his stunning looks and star power. But after marrying into the powerful Ho family, his life allegedly took a dark turn.
Conroy met Josie through an arranged introduction in 2003. Despite heavy resistance from her billionaire father, who disapproved of Conroy’s working-class roots and former nightclub modeling gig, the couple eventually married in Australia.
“Once you marry my daughter, you must obey her unconditionally,” Stanley Ho reportedly warned him at the wedding.
Conroy followed the rule—to the extreme. After Josie expressed insecurity over his looks, he was told to gain weight and “ruin” his appearance, reportedly so he wouldn’t be “too handsome” next to her. He stopped grooming himself, began overeating, and let his visual appeal deteriorate.
Despite an attempt at rebellion—including texting another woman— Josie publicly humiliated him and warned any potential “side chicks”: “Anyone who dares go near my man will face disaster. I’ll burn your hair off.”
From then on, Conroy remained quiet, loyal, and off the dating radar, as even other female celebrities avoided getting involved due to fear of the Ho family’s wrath.
Years of stress and declining health followed. In 2016, Conroy was diagnosed with colitis and cirrhosis. Then in 2022, he suffered a ruptured abdominal artery and was in a coma for 40 days, undergoing three surgeries. Josie flew to Australia, halting all work to be by his side.
“His stomach swelled like he was nine months pregnant, but his body was thin like a stick. His feet were always cold and turning purple,” Josie recalled tearfully.
Although Conroy survived, his health remains precarious. Just last month (July 2025), he suffered another medical emergency and was flown to the U.S. for surgery, prompting Josie to cancel her Taiwan tour.
She is currently paying for private planes, 24/7 nursing care, and physical therapists to help Shaun recover.
