Chinese Netizens Continue To Attack “Exhuma” Following Jang Won-young & BTS

As “Exhuma” is dominating the box office, Chinese netizens once again claimed that the Korean movie stole Chinese characters

The movie “Exhuma”, which has surpassed 8 million viewers within only 18 days since its premiere, is also a hot topic in China. After it was released in Taiwan on March 8th, some Chinese netizens expressed frustration saying it was inappropriate to draw Chinese characters on the faces of Korean actors.

Some people poured criticism, saying “In China, drawing letters on one’s face is considered an insulting and humiliating action”, “I found it funny that Koreans drew Chinese characters that they don’t even understand on their faces”, “Because of the movie, Koreans have started writing all kinds of Chinese characters on their faces. Who’s going to cover the shame of your mother tongue?”, “In ancient times, only criminals had letters drawn on their faces”, etc.

In response, Korean netizens angrily reacted, “Hanja (Chinese characters used in the writing of Korean) is not Chinese”, “Does anyone care about how people use the English alphabet?”, “People who watch movies illegally, do you guys have the right to speak?”, etc.

This is not the first time Chinese netizens have found faults with Korean content and Korean artists.

When IVE’s Jang Won-young wore a phoenix binyeo (Korean traditional ornamental hairpin) at the Paris Fashion Week, some Chinese claimed that the female singer stole Chinese culture. In addition, when BTS mentioned the 70th anniversary of the Korean War, the group sparked outrage among Chinese netizens who believed that the group was tarnishing the dignity of China. In addition, numerous Korean artists, including BLACKPINK, NewJeans, and IU, have suffered absurd attacks from Chinese netizens.

Aside from Korean artists, Chinese people also criticized Korean content. Coupang Play’s series “Anna”, starring Suzy, was criticized for portraying China as a country that only produces fake products.

Attacking the popular movie “Exhuma” this time, Chinese netizens is gradually stimulating backlash from Korean people as well.
