A wedding between a 27-year-old Chinese man and his 47-year-old African bride has become one of the most talked-about topics on Chinese social media — not only because of the couple’s age and cultural differences but also because of their visibly disapproving parents.

The groom, surnamed Chen, tied the knot with his bride, a woman two decades his senior, in Xintai City on October 6. Photos from the ceremony quickly went viral, showing the bride’s full figure and radiant smile — but also Chen’s parents’ stoic faces, which didn’t show a single hint of joy throughout the event.

According to 163 News, the couple’s union drew public attention for its stark contrast: Chen, slim and youthful, stood beside his older, foreign bride, who was previously married and has an adult son. Many netizens joked that “from afar, they looked like two women getting married.”

Despite being a foreigner, the bride chose to honor Chinese traditions. On the morning of the ceremony, she wore a red off-shoulder wedding dress and carefully pinned a boutonnière on Chen’s suit. Later, she changed into a traditional red gown with a veil as Chen guided her gently down the aisle. Friends and neighbors crowded the venue, curious to see the cross-cultural bride in person. Amid cheers and blessings, the two exchanged vows and officially became husband and wife.

But just hours after the photos surfaced online, public sentiment began to shift. Many noticed Chen’s parents appeared stiff and expressionless during the entire event. One acquaintance of the family revealed that Chen’s parents had strongly opposed the marriage, worrying about the couple’s age gap, cultural differences, and lifestyle mismatch. “They tried to talk him out of it, but Chen refused. In the end, they reluctantly attended the wedding out of obligation,” the source said.

Things took another turn when rumors about the bride’s background started circulating. A self-proclaimed insider claimed that the woman was the daughter of a South African tribal chief and came from a wealthy family owning mining assets — allegedly bringing a dowry worth millions of U.S. dollars, including Nvidia stock and luxury properties. “No wonder the groom was so determined to marry her,” one netizen commented sarcastically.

However, a conflicting report soon emerged, describing the bride as an English teacher at a local Chinese university, living modestly and eating with students in the campus cafeteria. When asked about her parents, she simply said they “work regular jobs overseas.”

The story has divided public opinion. Supporters say the marriage proves that love can transcend race, culture, and age. “She learned Chinese customs and wore a traditional gown — that shows sincerity,” one user wrote. Others, however, remain skeptical, pointing out that Chen previously complained about not affording rent but later flaunted luxury items like a new watch and phone after the wedding. “This looks more like a mutually beneficial arrangement,” one comment read.

As of now, Chen has disabled comments on his social media, and his wife has also stayed out of the public eye. Whether this is a story of true love or something more complicated, it continues to spark heated debate online — with some calling it “a love without borders,” and others hinting that “something doesn’t add up.”
