In an interview published on Sina’s Finance section on December 4, Hong Kong actress Charmaine Sheh opened up about mortality, family, and the life choices she has made after decades in the entertainment industry.

Sheh reflected on the recent passing of fellow actor Hui Siu-Hung and several other Hong Kong entertainers. Their deaths prompted her to think more deeply about life’s fragility. She described birth, aging, illness, and death as “inevitable stages everyone must face,” adding that for this reason, she has already arranged her will.

She explained that after working tirelessly in showbiz to save money, she hopes that if something were to happen to her, her lifelong earnings would not be wasted and her assets could be distributed according to her wishes.

The actress also spoke candidly about motherhood, revealing that she has moved past the desire to have children. She believes raising a child is “more exhausting than filming” and does not want to place herself under that kind of pressure at this stage in life.

Addressing comments that her life appears successful yet lacking in romance, Sheh offered a thoughtful perspective. She said life should not be treated like a picture where a family portrait is the only “correct” ending. Instead, individuals should choose the scenery they love and assemble the pieces of their own meaningful and fulfilling life.

Sheh’s bond with her mother remains at the center of her life. Although her mother has always supported her career, Sheh said she tries to spend as much time with her as possible. She described how she often checks her mother’s schedule before making social plans: if her mother is free, she chooses to have dinner with her rather than with friends. Maintaining this balance is something she values deeply.

Currently, Charmaine Sheh is busy filming the second season of The QUEEN of News, where she reprises her sharp, charismatic role as Man Wai Sum (“Sister Man”). Her career remains active and highly successful across markets including mainland China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

Born in 1975, Charmaine Sheh studied hotel management in Switzerland before joining the Miss Hong Kong pageant at her mother’s encouragement. After being crowned second runner-up in 1997, she signed with TVB and rose to fame through dramas such as ned a contract with TVB in 1998. She is best known for her roles in Return of the Cuckoo (2000), War and Beauty (2004), Maidens’ Vow (2006), Forensic Heroes II (2008), Beyond the Realm of Conscience (2009), Can’t Buy Me Love (2010), When Heaven Burns (2011), Line Walker (2014), Story of Yanxi Palace (2018) and The QUEEN of News (2023). In 2018, Story of Yanxi Palace reignited her popularity across Asia, and by 2023, The QUEEN of News propelled her status to a new peak, earning her extensive brand deals and media attention.

Behind her success lies a difficult childhood. When Charmaine Sheh was five years old, her father died in a traffic accident, leaving her mother to raise three children alone. The actress has often expressed her gratitude, saying that everything she does is to repay her mother’s sacrifices.

At 50, Charmaine Sheh remains unmarried and child-free, living independently in a HKD 30 million villa. She also owns nearly a dozen rental properties, establishing herself as a quiet but impressive real estate investor. After experiencing three relationships that did not work out, she has adopted a balanced philosophy toward romance: if love comes, she will embrace it; if not, she will continue focusing on work and living a fulfilled life.

Charmaine Sheh’s decision to draft her will reflects her desire to face life realistically and responsibly. It also reveals a woman who has built a life on her own terms rich in meaning, independence, and emotional clarity.
