Once hailed as “the cutest Nezha on screen,” Cao Jun was one of Asia’s most beloved child actors. However, after early fame and years away from the spotlight, the former prodigy now finds himself struggling to secure his place in the entertainment industry as he approaches his 40s.
Cao Jun entered show business at a remarkably young age and achieved widespread recognition almost immediately. Among his many early roles, his portrayal of Nezha in The Legend of Nezha (1999) remains one of the most iconic and widely praised interpretations of the character to this day.
An Asian Child Star Sensation
Born in 1988 in Shanghai, China, Cao Jun began acting at the age of eight. His breakout role came in True Destiny of the Little Monk (1997), where his natural acting and innocent charm captivated audiences across China and Southeast Asia.

The series became a massive hit, particularly in Singapore, where it recorded the highest viewership ratings of the year. Cao Jun’s performance earned him the Best Newcomer award at the 2nd Asian Television Awards in 1997, solidifying his status as a rising star.
Following this success, production companies in China and Singapore continued to build projects specifically around him, including Lotus Lantern, The Magistrate Who’s Nine, and other popular historical dramas. At the height of his fame, Cao Jun received dozens of leading-role offers each year and was often compared to martial arts prodigy Shi Xiaolong, another top child star of the era.
Stepping Away and Losing Momentum
After nearly eight consecutive years of nonstop filming, Cao Jun realized he was being typecast and struggling to grow as an actor. In 2004, following the completion of Lotus Lantern, he made the difficult decision to step away from the entertainment industry to focus on his education.

At the time, Cao Jun believed that returning with greater maturity and life experience would allow him to reinvent himself. However, reality proved far harsher.
When he returned to acting three years later, his popularity had significantly declined. Leading roles were no longer offered, and he was cast mostly in supporting parts with limited screen time. Film and television producers who once sought him out no longer came knocking.
An Uncertain Career in His Late 30s
Now 37 years old, Cao Jun continues to work steadily but quietly in the industry, appearing in dramas that fail to generate significant attention. Despite persistent effort, he has yet to land a breakthrough role that would restore his former glory.
As a result, he has often been labeled a “has-been child star,” a term that reflects the harsh reality many former prodigies face in adulthood.

His personal life has also drawn public scrutiny. In 2017, Cao Jun publicly confirmed his relationship with actress Lan Yingying. While meant to be a happy announcement, it instead brought pressure, as his partner’s career had far surpassed his own. Many netizens referred to him merely as “Lan Yingying’s boyfriend,” further overshadowing his identity as an actor.
“I’ve Already Hit Rock Bottom”
Despite setbacks, Cao Jun has remained resilient. In a past interview, he spoke candidly about his struggles and determination: “I’ve already fallen to the deepest bottom, so there’s no role I’m afraid to take anymore. One day, a real opportunity will come. If people look back at my journey, they’ll see how much I’ve grown. At the very least, I’ve stayed true to my own path.”
Once a household name synonymous with childhood nostalgia, Cao Jun’s journey now serves as a sobering reminder of how fleeting fame can be and how difficult it is for child stars to transition into lasting adult careers.
