Director Yoo Young Eun recently opened up about the dedication of lead actors Kim Seon Ho and Go Youn Jung in Netflix’s romantic comedy Can This Love Be Translated?. During an interview held in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, Yoo praised Kim for flawlessly handling emotionally complex lines in six different languages, including English, Japanese, and Italian, portraying multilingual interpreter Joo Ho Jin.
Yoo expressed both gratitude and guilt over the demanding role, noting that Kim had to perform heavy dialogue with shifting emotional tones across different languages sometimes in scenes where multiple languages were spoken simultaneously. Despite the intense physical and emotional workload, Kim never once complained and was even seen encouraging fellow cast and crew members throughout the production. “I was truly grateful,” the director said. “He filmed every single scene in every episode, often across different countries, and yet his attitude never faltered.”
Regarding Go Youn Jung, who plays global top star Cha Mu Hee, Yoo described her as an actress with an extraordinary love for her role and the production. “She would bring snacks for other actors and was present even during post-production,” said the director. “It was unforgettable to meet an actor who cares so deeply.”
Yoo also explained the intention behind Mu Hee’s dynamic styling in the series. Her fashion evolves to reflect her transformation from a struggling unknown to a dazzling international star. “Early in the series, her look is relaxed and natural. As she becomes a top actress, we aimed to highlight a more glamorous appearance even if it felt unfamiliar to her character to visually emphasize the dramatic change within a short timeline,” Yoo added.
Meanwhile, Kim Seon Ho shared his thoughts on returning to the rom-com genre. “It’s been a while,” he admitted during a separate interview. “To be honest, I’m not generous when it comes to evaluating my own performance. Even when watching pre-released episodes, I focus on areas for improvement.” Though he said he watched the series twice before its official release, he still worried about whether audiences would receive his acting well. “When something doesn’t come across the way I hoped, I always think, ‘I could’ve done more.’”
When asked whether his approach differs between thrillers and romantic comedies, Kim responded, “They require different expressions. Genres like thrillers often deal with unfamiliar emotions, but love is something everyone can relate to. That makes it even harder I always think about how to portray those common emotions in a way that resonates.”
