The Ministry of National Defense, “BTS’s military service issue will not be decided based on the result of the public opinion survey alone”
The Ministry of National Defense announced that BTS’s military service would not be decided only by the public opinion survey.
On September 1st, the Ministry of National Defense released an official statement, saying “As many media outlets are currently reporting as if the Ministry of National Defense would make a policy decision on BTS’s military service issue only with the result of the public opinion survey, the Ministry of National Defense would like to clarify our position.”
They emphasized, “The Ministry of National Defense would like to make it clear that we will not decide on BTS’s military service issue based on the result of the public opinion survey alone”.
Regarding the plan to conduct a public opinion survey on BTS’s military service issue suggested by the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts in the comprehensive policy inquiry at the National Assembly, the Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seob said, “Our intention is to listen to the opinion from the public”, adding “It does not mean the decision would be made according to the survey’s result. The purpose of the survey remains unchanged from our existing position.”
Earlier, Minister Lee said at the National Assembly’s National Defense Committee on August 31st that a public opinion survey would be conducted to resolve the controversy over BTS’s military service exemption issue. Referring to BTS’s military service issue, he said, “We have to consider the national interests based on many values, not only economic value but also constitutional value and cultural value.”
