BTS Suga, concerns about identity “Are we even an idol group?”

“SUCHWITA” Suga confessed his concerns about identity

On “SUCHWITA” uploaded through the YouTube channel “BANGTANTV” on Nov 20th, Uhm Jung-hwa appeared as a guest and shared various stories.

Suga asked Uhm Jung-hwa, “You were active as both an actor and a singer. You had a successful singing career and a successful acting career. I think, at times, there could have been some confusion over your identity. How was it for you back then?

Uhm Jung-hwa confessed, “It wasn’t easy. I started both at the same time when I debuted. There were so many biases back then. When I focused on acting, I could sense that people didn’t really acknowledge me as an actress. There was a time when I struggled between being an actress and a singer.”

Uhm Jung-hwa revealed that it took 7 years from her first work to filming her second movie “Marriage Is a Crazy Thing”. She smilingly explained, “I think people might’ve thought I was intruding into the unique or professional area of actors who only act. Or they might’ve only looked at me as an entertainer. But I loved doing both. You only get to live once! I should be able to do what I want Instead of cutting one thing out of my life.

Listening to Uhm Jung-hwa’s words, Suga shared his thoughts, saying, “I think being able to do both well is really amazing. In my case, I’ve been rapping since I was young, and I created my own beats and wrote songs, so I was kind of in between being an idol and a rapper.”

Suga continued, “Since I rapped, I was obviously a rapper. I also was a songwriter and producer. But because I was also an idol singer, I wasn’t acknowledged by this side.” Uhm Jung-hwa sympathized, “That’s how I felt.

Suga further elaborated, “Back then, idol groups had to be formed in a certain way. A certain number of members with one or two rappers, but our team wasn’t like that. We had three rappers and four singers. So, it was like, ‘Are we even an idol group?’

At the same time, he expressed his respect for Uhm Jung-hwa, “I was somewhere in the middle and I thought a lot about it. So I’d like to ask the people who criticized you back then about who was right. I think you made the right choice.”

Uhm Jung-hwa smilingly said, “Now… people’s thoughts on it have really changed.” Suga concluded, “I think the people who said all that back then were just jealous of you. Usually, there’s a break between jobs, but you could do something else during that time. So I think people could have been jealous about that.”
