BTS Jungkook ranks No.1 on Billboard HOT 100 with solo song “Seven”

Jungkook, known as BTS’s “golden maknae”, made his No.1 debut on Billboard Singles Chart ‘HOT 100’ with his solo song.

On July 25th, Billboard announced on their official website that Jungkook’s solo single “Seven” soared to the top spot on the latest ‘HOT 100’ chart. It surpassed No.2 Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town” to rank No.1. Last week’s No.1 – “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen – was pushed down to 3rd place.

Released by Jungkook on the 14th, “Seven” is a UK garage-style English song that combines Jungkook’s sweet vocals with lyrics expressing one’s desire to be together with their loved one throughout the week. American rapper Latto participated in the song as a featuring artist. “Seven” was made by Grammy Award-winning producer & composer Andrew Watt and Cirkuit. Jungkook himself played the male lead in his music video, while actress Han So Hee drew attention with her appearance as the female lead.

Since the release of “Seven”, Jungkook has continued to dominate the No.1 spot on the Daily Top Song Global chart of the world’s largest streaming platform Spotify. He further fueled the popularity of “Seven” by releasing remix versions of the song, such as the ‘Summer Mix’ and the band version. Jungkook even appeared on various programs, such as US ABC’s “2023 Summer Concert Series” and BBC Radio 1’s “Live Lounge”, showcasing passionate moves to promote his solo song.

‘HOT 100’ ranks the most popular songs of the week based on various factors such as music sales, streams, and radio broadcasts in the US. Jungkook became the second K-pop artist to reach the No.1 position on the ‘HOT 100’ chart with both his solo track “Seven” and his group’s songs, following BTS member Jimin. According to Billboard, during the recent charting period, “Seven” gained about 21.9 million streams and an estimated 6.4 million radio plays. Digital and CD sales amounted to around 153,000 units.

Billboard recently made some changes to the chart calculation method, excluding download figures from artist’s official websites as part of the chart data. Some view this as an attempt to restrict the frequent chart entries of K-pop artists. This is because K-pop artists who have entered the U.S. music market have been utilizing their official websites as a sales platform.

Since Billboard recently made some changes to the chart calculation method to restrict the frequent ‘HOT 100’ entries of K-pop artists, Jungkook’s ‘HOT 100’ achievement has become even more meaningful. Previously, “Seven” entered the UK Official Singles Chart TOP 100, another major pop music chart along with Billboard, at 3rd place.

With Jungkook’s No.1 ranking, BTS has now placed a total of 8 songs, including members’ solo tracks, at the top spot on the ‘HOT 100’ chart. BTS has topped ‘HOT 100’ with “Dynamite”, “Life Goes On”, “Butter”, “Permission To Dance”, “Savage Love” remix featuring Jawsh 685 & Jason Derulo, and “My Universe” collaboration with Coldplay. In particular, Jimin also won 1st place on this chart with his solo song “Like Crazy” earlier in March.

Among K-pop artists, BTS is the only K-pop artist to achieve the No.1 spot on the ‘HOT 100’. Billboard also noted that BTS became the 9th group, following The Beatles, Black Eyed Peas, and Destiny’s Child, to have members reaching No.1 on ‘HOT 100’ with their solo songs. After the announcement of his ‘HOT 100’ debut, Jungkook left a message on the fan community platform Weverse, saying, “Let’s go higher”, raising fans’ excitement.
