BTS and IU dominated the 2022 Gaon Music Awards

At the 11th Gaon Music Awards, BTS won nine awards and IU won five.

The 11th Gaon Chart Music Awards was held at 5 p.m. on January 27th at Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul with the MCs being Jae-jae, NCT’s Doyoung, and StayC’s Sieun.


The group that received the most awards on the day was BTS. BTS won the Artist Of The Year (Digital) for “Butter” in May, “Permission to Dance” in July, “My Universe” in September, Music Steady Seller Of the Year for “Butter,” and Artist Of The Year (Physical) for 3rd Quarter. They also won Mubeat Global Choice Award (Male), Social Hot Star Of the Year, Style Of The Year (Choreography), and the Retail Album Of The Year for “Dynamite“.

BTS did not attend the ceremony but sent a video expressing their gratitude instead. The members said, “We are so grateful from the bottom of our hearts,” adding, “They were songs we worked hard on, we are so happy that you loved our performances.” They added, “We will repay you with good songs and good performances,” adding, “Thank you ARMYs and those who love BTS’s music.”

IU was also a big winner with many awards. IU won this year’s  Artist Of The Year Award Digital for “Celebrity” in January, “Lilac” in March, and “Strawberry Moon” in October. She was also crowned Songwriter Of The Year and Record Production Of The Year.

IU did not appear on the stage that day and said via a video message, “The trophy at the Gaon Chart Music Awards is really cute in the shape of a G clef,” adding, “It’s fun to collect these trophies, but what would they give me if I collected 100 trophies?” she then said, “I received three trophies in the digital music category, and I think I worked a lot last year,” adding, “In particular, I participated in writing lyrics for all the songs in ‘Lilac’, and Songwriter Of The Year is my favorite award.” IU added a thank-you message to her agency staff and fans.

Besides BTS and IU, Taeyeon, SHINee, Kang Daniel, Brave Girls, Red Velvet, and TWICE, who received awards in the digital music category, and IZ*ONE, NCT Dream, and NCT 127, who received awards in the physical album category, expressed their feelings of joy. All singers asked their fans to take care of their health and said, “Thank you so much.”

During the acceptance speech, Taeyeon mentioned her late father, saying, “I miss my father,” and NCT Dream drew attention by leaving a comment, “We always have been associated with the word “growth,” and we will continue to grow this year.” NCT 127 also thanked the fans and promised, “We will show you a better image.”

Trot singers also gained great achievements. Lee Chan-won won the New Artist Award in the physical album category and Lim Young-woong took home the Adult Contemporary Music Of The Year trophy.
