The MTV VMAs’ Group of the Year award was established in 2019 and was previously won for four consecutive years by BTS until 2022.

BLACKPINK received nominations in a total of six categories, including Group of the Year and Best Choreography for the pre-release track ‘Pink Venom’ from their second full album ‘BORN PINK.’ They also secured nominations in Best K-pop, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, and Show of the Summer.

With this achievement, BLACKPINK made history as the first Asian girl group to win these categories at the MTV VMAs. Among girl groups worldwide, this marks the first time since TLC from the US in 24 years.

In 2020, BLACKPINK won Song of the Summer with ‘How You Like That.’ At the 2022 MTV VMAs, Lisa took home Best K-pop while BLACKPINK won Best Metaverse Performance.

Furthermore, Tomorrow X Together (TXT) was selected as the winner of the Push Performance category with ‘Sugar Rush Ride,’ and Stray Kids won Best K-pop with ‘S-Class.’

On the same day, Taylor Swift swept four categories with ‘Anti-Hero,’ released in October 2022: Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Direction, and Best Pop.
