BLACKPINK member and actress Jisoo is once again under scrutiny as she prepares to return to the screen with the upcoming Netflix series Boyfriend on Demand, set to premiere next month. After nearly six years of persistent criticism surrounding her acting skills, the new project is being closely watched as a potential turning point in her acting career or another setback.
Jisoo’s acting controversy first gained widespread attention in 2021 with JTBC’s Snowdrop. While the drama itself sparked debate, Jisoo’s performance drew repeated criticism for weak character interpretation, limited emotional expression, and unclear diction. Despite starring alongside actor Jung Hae-in, many viewers felt she failed to fully escape the limitations often associated with idol-turned-actors.

Her second leading role in Coupang Play’s Newtopia did little to change that perception. Critics again pointed out issues with her vocal delivery and intonation, as well as a lack of depth in facial expressions and emotional arcs. Some viewers even compared her acting tone to parody-style performances on SNL Korea, arguing that her delivery lacked realism. The contrast with co-star Park Jung-min’s nuanced performance further highlighted her shortcomings, according to audience reactions.
Against this backdrop of accumulated criticism, Boyfriend on Demand has become a decisive project for Jisoo. The romantic comedy follows a webtoon producer exhausted by reality who experiences love through a virtual dating simulation. Jisoo plays Seo Mirae, a webtoon PD who explores romance within a virtual world.

Unlike her previous genre-heavy or historical roles, Boyfriend on Demand leans into a lighter romantic comedy tone, potentially offering Jisoo a better fit. The genre allows room for brighter energy and casual pacing, which could work in her favor. At the same time, rom-coms rely heavily on natural, everyday acting, meaning her fundamentals delivery, expressions, and emotional flow will be judged even more directly.
Public expectations are now harsher than ever. With years of repeated criticism behind her, audiences are watching closely to see whether Jisoo can finally shed the long-standing “acting controversy” label or face another critical crossroads. As the release approaches, Boyfriend on Demand stands as one of the most important tests of her acting career to date.
