Beloved Hong Kong actor Benz Hui was laid to rest in a Buddhist ceremony in Tai Wai on November 17. The heartfelt farewell drew an outpouring of emotions from family, fans, and industry legends, many of whom had worked alongside the actor during his prolific five-decade career.
Hui’s daughter, Hui Wai Ching, spoke with deep emotion, promising to fulfill her father’s final wish: to care for her mother and their extended family. “I’m proud to be your daughter,” she said, expressing regret that he passed away before she could give him the joy of becoming a grandfather.

TVB actor Miu Kiu Wai, accompanied by his wife, former actress Jaime Chik, struggled to hold back tears. He recalled having lunch with Benz Hui just before his condition worsened. “He didn’t mention his illness,” Miu said. “I only found out when his wife called.” By the time Miu visited the hospital, Hui was in a coma. During interviews, Miu turned toward the wall, silently wiping away tears. “He was always genuine, full of life, and deeply loved people,” he said.
Charmaine Sheh also attended and referred to Hui as a father figure. “He treated me with warmth and kindness. He wasn’t just a senior actor—he was family,” said Sheh, who often played his on-screen daughter.

Other prominent attendees included Nick Cheung, Bosco Wong, Kenneth Ma, Nancy Wu, Michael Miu, and Louis Cheung. Nick Cheung praised Hui’s exceptional ability to elevate every project, noting that though Hui often played supporting roles, his performances made leads shine.
From 4 to 5 PM local time, the ceremony was open to the public. Hundreds had lined up early to pay their respects. One fan said, “I grew up watching his dramas. He felt like a part of our family.”

Inside the funeral hall, portraits of Benz Hui were displayed, including his memorable “Happy Sir” look from Line Walker. A central floral tribute from his wife read: “To my beloved husband Benz, I will forever cherish your love.” Wreaths from stars including Jackie Chan, Louis Koo, Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung, and Lisa Wang surrounded the venue.
In a final act of kindness, Hui’s family announced all funeral donations would go to a charity supporting children with cancer—an extension of the actor’s legacy of compassion.
Benz Hui passed away on October 28 at age 77 after a battle with cancer. Known as “Benz” for driving a Mercedes-Benz to TVB sets—long before it was common—he built a name through grit, not family connections.
In a 53-year career that spanned nearly 200 TV and film roles, Benz Hui became a cornerstone of Hong Kong entertainment. From righteous mentors to cunning villains, his performances captivated generations. As critics have noted, he was one of TVB’s finest character actors, delivering unforgettable roles in series like The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (1986) and Line Walker.
