Bang Ye Dam parts ways with YG after 9 years: What does the future hold for the unlucky genius?

Bang Yedam regrettably left YG Entertainment after 9 years.

On November 8th, YG said, “After long discussions with Mashiho and Bang Yedam, their exclusive contracts have been terminated. Mashiho is in need of sufficient recovery for health reasons, and we made this decision for Bang Yedam to have an environment where he can grow as a producer with his own musical color. It is a great regret as they are the two members who were with TREASURE from the start, but we ask for your encouragement and support.”

Bang Yedam has already announced that he will be taking a break from TREASURE activities in May to focus on studying music. And eventually, he decided to leave the group after half a year, leaving a deep regret for the fans.

As Bang Yedam chose to part ways with YG, both Bang Yedam and TREASURE are now facing new challenges.

When Bang Yedam first appeared in SBS ‘K-Pop Star Season 2’ in 2011, the public was stunned. When Bang Yedam was only 10, Yang Hyun Suk and Park Jin Young both fell for his talent. His dancing and singing skills could beat any star. Bang Yedam later became the runner-up of ‘K-Pop Star Season 2’ and signed an exclusive contract with YG. The public didn’t think Bang Yedam would debut right away, as the average age of debut for idol groups is usually in their late teens, but the wait was longer than predicted.

It was not until 2019, the first time in 8 years, that his debut was confirmed. As his debut in ‘YG Treasure Box’ was pushed back, it was not until 2020 that he finally debuted as a TREASURE member. Although he released the solo digital single ‘Wayo’ in 2020, it was not enough considering his overwhelming talent and pre-debut buzzworthiness.

Even after his debut in TREASURE. Although he took on the challenge of writing, composing and producing, such as working on a fan song or participating in WINNER’s Kang Seungyoon’s solo album, he was unable to show all his potential in a very short period of promotion. In Korea, Bang Yedam hasn’t completely escaped the “that kid from K-pop star” image yet. Since he debuted after such a long time, the public’s memory of Bang Yedam is also fading.

The same goes for TREASURE. In any case, TREASURE still has the image of “Bang Yedam’s group”. How TREASURE will fill Bang Yedam’s vacancy is definitely a big task.

However, although he waited to debut for a long time, Bang Yedam is still young and in his early 20s. Moreover, from ‘K-Pop Star Season 2’ until now, Bang Yedam has shown his innate talent, sense and received support from many people.  This means that the possibilities that have not yet been explored are endless. Attention is now focused on what kind of new steps Bang Yedam and TREASURE will show in the future.
