Biography

Sungchan is a South Korean rapper, singer, and dancer. He first rose to prominence in 2020 as a member of the boy group NCT, managed by SM Entertainment. After concluding his activities with NCT in 2023, he later re-debuted as a member of the South Korean boy band RIIZE, also under SM Entertainment.

Early Life and Education

Jung Sung-chan was born on September 13, 2001, in Seoul, South Korea. Growing up in Seoul, Sungchan showed an early interest in sports and physical activity, particularly soccer, which he played actively during his school years.

He was first scouted by SM Entertainment while still a student. Although initially hesitant about auditioning, Sungchan enrolled in a dance academy to improve his skills and prepare for the audition process. After further training, he successfully passed the audition and became a trainee under SM Entertainment. He trained for approximately four years before making his official debut.

Career

2020–2023: Debut in NCT and Activities

Sungchan was introduced as a new member of NCT on September 20, 2020, alongside fellow member Shotaro, in conjunction with the announcement of NCT’s major project album NCT 2020: Resonance Pt. 1. He made his stage debut with NCT and its rotational unit NCT U with the single “90’s Love.”

In 2021, Sungchan expanded his activities beyond performing by serving as a host for the weekly music program Inkigayo, where he worked with co-hosts and helped guide audiences through music charts and live segments. He also appeared in variety and reality content tied to NCT projects, further increasing his visibility.

Although he was involved in multiple group projects and media appearances, Sungchan did not become part of a fixed sub-unit within NCT during this period.

On May 24, 2023, SM Entertainment announced that Sungchan and Shotaro would conclude their chapter with NCT, signaling their departure from the group to prepare for a debut in a forthcoming new boy band.

2023–Present: RIIZE

In mid-2023, SM Entertainment unveiled plans for its next generation boy group under the company’s new initiative. Sungchan was officially announced as a member of RIIZE on August 1, 2023. RIIZE made its formal debut on September 4, 2023, with the single album Get a Guitar, which achieved significant commercial success upon release.

As part of RIIZE, Sungchan continues to contribute as a rapper, vocalist, and dancer, distinguished by his deep voice, strong performance presence, and stage charisma. Riize immediately garnered attention domestically and internationally as one of SM Entertainment’s highly anticipated new acts.
